Plaque ARCHIBALD
JOHN HASLAM SOLD
Archibald
was born in Gloucester in 1887 and served with 3rd Battery
Gloucestershire Royal Artillery. Served as 831995 Sergeant, Royal
Field Artillery. Died of wounds 23 August 1917. Buried at
Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
Gloucester Journal: “Mrs Haslam
has received a letter from Chaplain Murray, Canadian Casualty
Station, France, stating that her husband, Sergt. A.J. Haslam, R.F.A.
Previously reported wounded in the chest, died on Thursday week at
9.15 pm. “His condition was serious from the first, the chest wound
having penetrated into the lung... everything was done for him and he
came safely through an operation. His breathing, however, became
increasingly difficult and he grew weaker... I was in the Ward and
found him evidently so much weaker that I said the prayer for the
dying by his side. He was still conscious but hardly able to speak. A
few minutes after that he became unconscious and so quietly passed
away.... Sgt Haslam, who was an old Territorial, was employed in the
“Journal” and “Citizen” Printing Works when he was called up
at the outbreak of war.”
