The story of these rare awards to the Nepalese Contingent can be found in the Indian National Archive:

Office of the Private Secretary to H.E. The Viceroy. Honours Branch. 1943
Proposed allotment of awards of the Indian Meritorious Service Medal to personnel of the Nepalese Contingent.
At the end of the last war, apart from certain higher honours, 20 honourary O.B.I.s 2nd Class and 40 Indian Meritorious Service Medals were awarded to officers in the status of VCOs of the Indian Army and other ranks respectively of the Nepalese contingent, then consisted of 10 battalions. The approval of the Secretary of State was obtained and these awards were then made on the recommendation of H.H. the Prime Minister of Nepal. It was decided to settle the policy to be adopted now. After referring the matter to H.H. the Maharaja of Nepal, the Secretary, External Affairs Department, suggests that as the present Nepalese Contingent consists of 8 battalions, awards of the following scale may be made:

1. 16 O.B.I and 32 I.M.S.M. awards should be made in the forthcoming New Years Honours.   2. 4 O.B.I. And 8 I.M.S.M. awards annually thereafter.

The Nepalese Government will be consulted in connection with these awards, recommendations being submitted through the Senior Nepalese Officer attached to the staff of H.E. the C-in-C. The awards of the I.M.S.M. Proposed to be made to members of the Nepalese Contingent are to be honourary and will not count against the allotment of the M.S.M. awards for any regiment/corps of the Indian Army.

AWARDS NEPALESE CONTINGENT: H.E. the Commander-in-Chief is pleased to sanction the awards of Honorary Indian Meritorious Service Medal to the following other ranks of the Nepalese Contingent for services during the war.
