May 1861. To No. 1 Battery, 24th Brigade 1862. 'Resigned' to Sergeant 1 Feb.
1868. Discharged at Meean Mear 22 Dec. 1868, aged 37. Intended place

course in 'military instrument repairing' 26 May 1894 and was rated 'very
superior'. Promoted 2nd Corporal December 1894. To 1st class Army Reserve
24 December 1896. He was recalled 18 December 1899 and made Corporal in April
1900. Arrived in South Africa 4 January 1900. Returned to UK 11 Sept. 1902
and discharged with rank of Sapper 8 March 1903. Clasps to medals confirmed
on papers. A rare combination of clasps to the Royal Engineers, with apparently
only one other such recipient who's medals are in the RE's Museum.

Copy papers. James Connor was born in Renfrew in 1864. He enlisted 28 March
1885 at Hamilton and listed his trade as 'miner'. Posted to 2nd Battalion
and by July of that year he was confined "awaiting trial". He was convicted
of "Insubordinate language" and imprisoned until October. To India 30 December
1885. Various postings around India and several periods of sickness. Served
in the Hazara campaigns of 1888 and 1891. Discharged 27 March 1897. Copy medal
roll confirming both clasps.

different - A silver verge pocket watch £250
Engraved with the initials H M and XVIIITH HUSSARS
Engraving much clearer than in the photograph. The pocket watch and outer
case are hallmarked for Chester 1892. Watch not working at the moment but
the original key is attached. No doubt, the watch could be restored to working
order.
Watch attributed to Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Esdaile Malet, who was commissioned
in the regiment in 1859. He went on command the 18th Hussars from 1882 to
1886. In 1907 he published "The Historical Memoirs of the XVIII Hussars."

French musketeers. The French formed up and loaded their muskets to fire
on the dragoons as they rode off. Instead Beardmore gave the order to charge.
The astonished enemy hesitated, threw down their muskets and surrendered." Six clasps is the maximum to the regiment. Busted from TSM to
Private and then bought himself out, must be a story there?

cadet 1831-32. Embarked for India 27 May 1833. 2nd Lieut, October 1833, 55th
Bengal N.I. Posted to 70th B.N.I. 24 May 1834. Passed examination at Fort
William College 30 August 1836 as an Interpreter.
Inspection Report of 70th B.N.I. 26 Jan. 1837 "Brig. Penny states that
Ensign Robertson, who is officiating as Interpreter & QuarterMaster,
appears to be a promising young officer." Lieutenant 15 March 1839. Posted
to 31st B.N.I. as Interpreter 1843-44, and to 7th Bengal Light Cavalry 1846.
Appointed Commandant of the Delhi Palace Guards 1847. Served in the 2nd Sikh
War with his regiment 1848-49. Appointed Commissioner for the Cis-Sutlej
states 22 Dec. 1849. Captain 9 August 1851. Appointed Superintendent of the
Bhatti Territories 26 February 1852. Retired 10 January 1859, honourary rank
of Major. Died at Worthing, Sussex 8 October 1869.

and there was no reason why he did not charge with the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava.
He was on the troopship Himalaya when he died, probably from sickness. The
last L of his surname has been impressed upside down.

In WWI served as 31424 CSM S. Cownie, 13th Battalion Royal Scots. Awarded
the Military Medal 19 November 1917 and bar to DCM 5 December 1918 - "During a counter-attack
by the enemy he held up by grenade fire a party of the enemy attacking the
right flank of the company until he was practically surrounded. His initiative
saved the situation. On another occasion he got bombs and ammunition up to
the company during an enemy bombing attack, and personally accounted for three
men." Also entitled to a British War and Victory Medal. This would be a possibly
unique combination of awards?

Stanley Mowbray Davenport was born
1892, son of William and Mary Davenport,
of Hawthorn Villa, Prestwich, Manchester. He was killed serving with the
8th Battalion, Rifle Brigade on 30 July 1915. He is listed on the Ypres Memorial.
On that date the 8th Battalion was holding the lip of Hooge Crater (Battle
of Neuve Chapelle). At 3.15 am the Germans attacked using, for the first time,
liquid frame throwers. His brothers were also killed in the war: Private Alfred
Davenport, 31st Canadian Infantry was killed 9 April 1917 at Vimy Ridge,
and Private Albert Victor Davenport, 38th Australian Infantry died of wounds
in France 17 February 1917.

13 March 1868, in Lochgelly, Fifeshire and served 20 years in the Army Service
Corps, serving in South Africa (awarded QSA with 5 clasps). He joined the
Territorial Force in March 1909, aged 41, and served as S.S.M. in the South
Midlands ASC. He was mobilised 5 August 1914 and discharged to commission
21 January 1915. A/Capt. 3 May 1916. Adjutant 17 June 1916. Lieut. 1 July 1917. Served
in Italy. Embarked at Taranto 17 October 1918 and arrived in Salonica on 22
October. Posted to 122 Coy. 28th Div. Train, ASC. In November he embarked
for the Dardanelles and was deatched to 84 Bde Supplies. Relinquished rank
of Acting Captain 28 Jan. 1919. He returned to the UK and relinquished his
commission 16 August 1920 "on account of ill health contacted on active
service." Entitled to QSA and 1914/15 trio. Note: mistakenly listed as a
Victory Medal - we don't have it!

keeper by trade. Lived at The Lodge, Knockenpark, Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire.
Enlisted 6 September 1914. To France 10 May 1915 with 8th Battalion. Admitted
16 General Hospital, Le Treport 13 Oct. 1915 with tonsilitis. Rejoined his
battalion. Invalided to Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital, London 13 May
1916. Discharged 'no longer physically fit' 4 July 1916. Awarded Silver War
Badge. Medical notes state: "Has been more or less inefficient since Loos
action Sept. 1915. Rapid heart action, often giddy, generally ailing. Result
of active service, strain of action at Loos."

Lancashire Regiment aged 15 years on 22 November 1893 in Kings County Ireland.
1894 he transferred to 2nd Bn, with whom he served to 1913, attaining rank
of Band Sergeant. During his pre 1914 service he spent almost 10 years
overseas on garrison duty in Egypt and later India. LSGC with gratuity
awarded April 1912. Disharged 1919, place of residence was in Barrow-in-Furness.
