Merriman was born in 1899 and was a laboratory worker in Birmingham in
1939. He volunteered for the AFS (Auxilairy Fire Service) on outbreak of
war. In August 1941 the AFS and local Fire Brigades were merged to form
the NFS - National Fire Service
