Alexander
Sannio Chugg was born in Barnstaple, Devon and enlisted January 1878,
aged 24 and was a "carpenter and draughtsman." Discharged as
Quartermaster Sergeant, November 1902 and entitled to Khedive's Star
and Army Long Service Good Conduct Medal. The Hampshire Telegraph 22
January 1887 reported on the inquest into an accident at Cambridge
Barracks, Portsmouth when two privates of the Worcestershire Regiment
were killed by a gas explosion. "Sergeant Major Alexander Sannio Chugg,
Foreman of Works, Royal Engineers" gave evidence.
In 1921 he was a "Draughtsman on the Royal Engineer Civil Staff" at
Derby. He died 24 July 1926 in Great Brookham, Surrey.

Mills was a 23 year old blacksmith when he enlisted in January 1868.
Served in Canada (1870), Bermuda (1870-74), Gibraltar (1874-80), Egypt
(1884-87). Convicted of being absent without leave 1886. Discharged June 1889.

1st Battalion, West India Regiment. Frederick Bennett was born in
Cornwall, Jamaica and enlisted September 1897, aged 20. To Africa 4
January 1898. He was invalided from Sierra Leone suffering with
"valvular disease of the heart" and discharged 13 September 1898.

Patrick
Murphy was born in Cork in 1881 and joined the navy November 1897.
Served on Highflyer from 1900 to 1903. Served through WWI and in
October 1917 was posted to the Q Ship, HMS Candytuft. She was torpedoed
by U39 18th November 1917 and drifted ashore in Algeria. Most of the
crew were rescued by a French trawler. Murphy's papers state "Commended
on the loss of Candytuft." London Gazette 30 June 1919 he was awarded
the Meritorious Service Medal, also entitled to 1914/15 Star trio.
Transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve March 1923.

Medal renamed in large capital letters. Edwyn Harland attended Royal
Military College 1891. Commanded a small detachment of 24 men of the
Hampshire Regiment in the conflict. In the Boer War he was attached to
the Rhodesia Regiment Mounted Infantry and was killed at Mafeking 16
May 1900.

Cape Town Volunteer Engineers. Medal and clasp confirmed on roll. In
1896 a G.H. Whitley wrote to his brother in Belfast, from Mafeking
about the threat of war in South Africa. During the Boer War a George
Herbert Whitley served as a Section Leader with the Imperial Bearer
Corps, possibly the same man. Only 562 Transkei clasps issued.
