William Mills was a 23 year old blacksmith when he enlisted in January 1868. Served in Canada (1870), Bermuda (1870-74), Gibraltar (1874-80), Egypt (1884-87). Convicted of being absent without leave 1886. Discharged June 1889.

Roll confirms East Surrey Regiment. Medal obverse is worn and end of naming is worn. George Francis was born in 1862.

Patrick Murphy was born in Cork in 1881 and joined the navy November 1897. Served on Highflyer from 1900 to 1903. Served through WWI and in October 1917 was posted to the Q Ship, HMS Candytuft. She was torpedoed by U39 18th November 1917 and drifted ashore in Algeria. Most of the crew were rescued by a French trawler. Murphy's papers state "Commended on the loss of Candytuft." London Gazette 30 June 1919 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, also entitled to 1914/15 Star trio. Transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve March 1923.


British South Africa Company Medal (Rhodesia) Mashonaland 1897   LT. E. HARLAND 2ND HANTS. REGT.  SOLD
Medal renamed in large capital letters. Edwyn Harland attended Royal Military College 1891. Commanded a small detachment of 24 men of the Hampshire Regiment in the conflict. In the Boer War he was attached to the Rhodesia Regiment Mounted Infantry and was killed at Mafeking 16 May 1900.
