John William Appleby enlisted February 1915, aged 19. He was a groom, living in Durham. After moving regiments a couple of times, he was in the Army Service Corps when he went to France in March 1915. Returned to UK August 1916, then back to France in December. Returned to UK November 1917 and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. Returned to France 28 March 1918 with 21 st Battalion Machine Gun Corps. 29 September 1918 "wounded Gas" during the recapture of Fins, in the Somme region. The War Diary states: "Enemy counter attack. 11 OR wounded, gas." Admitted to 2 Canadian General Hospital Awarded the M.M. in London Gazette 21 October 1918. Demobilized 4 March 1919. Entitled to 1914/15 Star, though the MIC shows William J. Appleby. 1939 census shows him serving with ARP.

Medals to two brothers, both killed in action.
Thomas Walter Brotherstone was born in Eastcombe, near Stroud, Gloucestershire in 1896. Dennis was born in 1899, both sons of Thomas and Mary. Both enlisted into the Gloucestershire Regiment. Dennis was killed 9 October 1917 serving with 1/4th Battalion and is buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery. Thomas transferred to the South Wales Borderers and was killed 11 April 1918 with the 2nd Battalion. He is listed on the Ploegsteert Memorial. Both are listed on the Eastcombe war memorial.

2080895 Private J. Shilton, 9th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment was wounded in action at Ru-Ywa, Burma on 17 February 1945. On this day the Battalion took part in the amphibious river landings on the Arakan Coast at Ru-Ywa, as part of the 25th Indian Division. The Arakan campaign was a brutal series of battles fought in dense jungles and hills of the Arakan, and so a series of amphibious landings were mounted along the coast. The beginning of the operation at Ru-Ywa was captured by an army film unit and can be found online. Royal Indian Navy craft ferried men of the 9th York and Lancaster Regiment and the 5th Maharatta Light Infantry to the shore. Efficiency Medal awarded 1948 (List No. 10).

Narsing Rana was born in January 1925 and enlisted January 1941. Served in India 1941 to 1948. Malaya 194-57. Sergeant 1865. (WOII 1959) Hong Kong 1958-60. Commissioned Lieutenant August 1960. Captain February 1965. Singapore and Sarawak 1960-66. Retired 1966. "Capt. Narsing Rana has served for 26 years, including six years commissioned service. He has earned a fine reputation as a fighting soldier. He is a keen disciplinarian and has earned the respect of all ranks who have been under his command. His loyalty and integrity are without question."

Medal confirmed on roll. Charles Michael O'Connell was born in Manchester and enlisted 1887, aged 18. Served in India 1889 to 1895. Discharged 1899. Re-called May 1899. Entitled to Queen's South Africa Medal with 3 clasps. Discharged August 1903. Medal roll and service record does not state drummer. Naming obviously altered at some time.

William Lawrence Marshall was born in Ilford, Essex and enlisted into The Queen's Regiment May 1890. Served in Malta, East Indies and South Africa. Entitled to Queen's South Africa Medal (5 clasps) and King's South Africa Medal (2 clasps). Discharged August 1902. Re-enlisted August 1914, aged 43. To France 12 May 1915. Tried and sentenced to 56 days for drunk on active service. Sent back to UK 26 November 1915. He died 9th February 1947.

Charles William Hurcombe was born 1898 in Randwick, Gloucestershire. Served with 7th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. Later transferred to the Army Service Corps. He married Gladys Nicholls in 1920 and later lived in Taunton. He died there in 1982.

Reginald C.L. Deane was born in King's Stanley, Gloucestershire in 1899. Served with the 2nd Hampshire Regiment and 5th Royal Berkshire Regiment. He died in Stroud in 1974.

Harry James Lewis was born in Gloucester August 1898 and joined the navy in October 1913 as Boy II Class. Joined H.M.S. St. George (depoty ship, Mediterranean) February 1915. Joined H.M.S. Roxburgh May 1915. She was patrolling the North Sea and on 20 June 1915 was hit in the bow by a German torpedo. She made it back to port and was repaired. October 1917 he was posted H.M.S. Egmont (shore base, Malta). Discharged January 1920. He died in Gloucester in 1981.

Horace Jones Castle was born in 1884 in Dudley. He enlisted April 1916 and was posted to the 6th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. Went to France in December and posted to the 10th Battalion. Wounded (GSW left knee) in action 19 September 1917 in the Battle of the Menin Road. Treated at 1st Birmingham War Hospital. Posted to 2/8th Worcesters. Discharged March 1919. He died 7 March 1954 in Dudley.

George Holden was from Gateshead and served with 9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. Gunshot wound right side of chest 10 June 1916 at Ypres. After treatment he returned and was wounded 25 July 1918 (shrapnel wound head). Demobilised February 1919.

Walter Waye was born 1886. Enlisted August 1915. Appeared as wounded on a casualty list published 11 May 1916. Discharged February 1917 due to wounds. In 1939 he was a clerk at the Ministry of Health, living in Dagenham.

George Maurice Fitzgerald was born in Islington, London and served with 9th Battalion London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles). He was killed in action in France 25 September 1916. He is listed on the Thiepval Memorial. Sold with 9th London's cap badge.

Edward Smith was born in Birmingham in February 1879. He went to France 8 November 1914. He was captured at Fleurbaix 19 December 1914. Pension card shows wounds to head and abdomen.

Thomas Pickup was born 1876 and lived in Bolton. Enlisted February 1915 with the East Lancashire Regiment.
To France 19 May 1915. Wounded right leg 7 July 1916 at Contalmaison. Transferred to 67 Company, Labour Corps. Discharged April 1919.

John Charles Burgess served with 7th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was wounded in the left shoulder and captured at Epehy, 22 March 1918. He was from Stroud Green, London.

Copy service record. Duncan Bruce Watson was born 19 October 1912 in Port Elizabeth and was living in Umbilo Road, Durban when he enlisted into the South African Service Corps.
Posted to 1 Supply Company, Q Service Corps December 1940 in Mombasa. Acting Lance-Corporal October 1941. Discharged 1 October 1945. Medals confirmed on papers.
He died in Durban 6 July 1961.
